What is dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy (or dermatoscopy) is a non-invasive diagnostic method used by dermatologists for detailed examination of the skin, especially for suspicious pigmented lesions, melanomas, moles, blood vessels, and other skin lesions.

What is dermoscopy?
Dermoscopy is performed using a dermoscope — an optical device that provides magnification and illumination of the skin, allowing visualization of structures that are not visible to the naked eye.

There are: Handheld dermoscopes (often with polarized light)

What can be diagnosed?
Melanoma – a dangerous form of skin cancer
Nevi (moles) – monitoring whether they are benign or at risk
Basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma
Actinic keratoses
Warts, angiomas, seborrheic keratoses
Diagnosis of psoriasis, rosacea, lupus, and other inflammatory diseases

Advantages of dermoscopy
Early detection of skin cancer
Reduction of unnecessary biopsies
Monitoring lesions over time (especially in patients with many moles)
Painless and quick
Can be used on hair-bearing areas, nails, and mucous membranes

What does the examination look like?
The dermatologist uses a small device called a dermoscope, which is placed directly on the skin.
An analysis is performed of the color, shape, borders, and structure of the lesion.
The lesion may be photographed and stored for comparison during future examinations.

When should you have dermoscopy?
If you have a new or changed mole
If there is itching, bleeding, or change in color/size
If you have many moles (>50)
After sun exposure or use of tanning beds
